The Strategic Priorities Of The Department Are

1. Conduct fisheries patrols in Liberian waters to ensure monitoring control and surveillance of domestic and foreign fishing activity.
2. Ensure that all Liberian-flagged fishing and fishing support vessels operating outside of the Liberian EEZ are subject to authorization, and to effective monitoring, control and surveillance.
3. Operationalise Liberia’s obligations as a party to the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA).
4. Maintain a functioning Fisheries Monitoring Centre (FMC) and Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) to combat illegal unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
5. Provide clear and timely reporting to senior management in NaFAA of all suspected IUU fishing activity.
6. Ensure compliance in inland fisheries with applicable legislation and regulations.
7. Increase community participation in MCS activities.
8. Enhance inter-agency and bi-lateral coordination and collaboration in the fight against IUU fishing.
9. Ensure adherence of the department’s working practices with its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
10. In cooperation with the communications department, increase knowledge by stakeholders of all applicable legislation and regulations governing the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
11. Implement all other aspects of Liberia’s National Plan of Action to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing (NPOA-IUU) not listed above.
